How to Get a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) in India – 2026 Guide
A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is an official document issued by Indian police confirming that the applicant has no criminal record. It is required for visa applications, overseas employment, immigration, and some government jobs.
When is a PCC Required?
Visa Application
Many countries require a PCC from your home country as part of long-term visa or PR applications. Common for US, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, UAE.
Overseas Employment
Foreign employers or recruitment agencies often require a PCC before issuing an employment contract or work permit.
Immigration & PR
Permanent residency applications typically need a PCC from every country where you have lived for 12+ months.
Government Jobs
Certain central and state government positions require a police character certificate for security clearance.
How to Apply for a PCC in India
- 1Option A – Via Passport Seva Portal (for those with a passport) — Log in to passportindia.gov.in → Apply for Police Clearance Certificate → Fill the form → Pay fee (₹500) → Book appointment at PSK or POPSK → Attend appointment with original documents.
- 2Option B – Directly at a Police Station (for those without a passport) — Visit your jurisdictional police station with a written application requesting a Character Certificate. Submit identity proof, address proof, and passport-size photos. The station will verify and issue the certificate within 7–15 working days.
- 3Step 3 – Documents Required — Identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID), address proof (utility bill, Aadhaar), passport copy (if applicable), passport-size photographs (2), and application form.
- 4Step 4 – Police Verification — A police officer will visit your stated address to verify residence. Be present or arrange for someone to confirm your identity.
- 5Step 5 – Collect the Certificate — Via Passport Seva, the PCC is typically issued in 7–21 days and can be downloaded from the portal. From a police station, collect in person after the designated processing time.
Important Tips for PCC Applications
- Apply at the police station of your permanent address — not your current temporary address.
- If you have lived abroad, some countries ask for a PCC from that country too. Check the specific requirements of your destination country.
- The PCC issued via Passport Seva Portal is officially apostilled and accepted internationally.
- Processing time is typically 7–21 working days. Apply well in advance of your visa or job application deadline.
- A PCC is NOT the same as a passport. Do not confuse police verification for passport with the PCC process.
