NC stands for Non-Cognizable, and it is the term visitors most often leave still not understanding. An NC is a formal register entry recording that you reported something — for an offence where police cannot investigate or arrest without a magistrate's permission.

An FIR — First Information Report — is the document that sets the criminal justice system in motion.
