Police Verification for Passport in India
Police verification is a mandatory step for Indian passport issuance. A police officer verifies your address, identity, and that no criminal cases are pending against you. Here is exactly how it works.
Quick Summary
- Normal passport: police verify BEFORE passport is issued (~1–3 weeks)
- Tatkaal passport: passport issued first, verification done after (post police verification)
- Police officer will visit your address — keep original documents ready
- Track status at passportindia.gov.in
- Helpline: 1800-258-1800 (toll-free)
How Police Verification Works for Passport
Apply for Passport
Apply on the Passport Seva Portal (passportindia.gov.in). Complete the online form and book an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
Visit PSK for Document Verification
Visit the PSK on the appointment date with original documents. After verification, the passport application status moves to 'Granted' and the passport is dispatched — unless police verification is pending.
Police Verification Initiated
MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) sends your details to your local police station for verification. A police officer will visit your stated address to verify your residence and identity.
Attend the Police Visit / Go to Station
Be present when the police officer visits. Provide original documents. If you miss the visit, the officer will leave a notice — you must then visit the police station to complete verification.
Verification Report Submitted
Police submit the verification report to the passport authority. Favorable report means passport is issued; adverse report requires further review.
Passport Dispatched
Once verification is complete and report is favorable, the passport is dispatched by speed post to your registered address.
